ROMANTIC LOVE
Is love the new religion?
When we asked them to describe love to us with one word, Jean chose “unconditionality,” while Camille said “paradise.” Although they used the word ‘commitment’ several times during the interview, they didn’t choose it for their answer. Yet the very fact that so many couples we interviewed in the United States and Europe did choose ‘commitment’ as their answer shows that commitment—dedication, allegiance, devotion—is one of the central features of romantic love. But it is also the most important aspect of religiosity. This is what is expected of the faithful—to be dedicated and devoted, to place the other first, to need that other, to be faithful to them, willing to make sacrifices for them and defend them. Devotion in love, as in religion, implies giving one’s trust in advance, taking the leap into the unknown, absolute availability.
At a time when we often neglect and forget love, this book gives a very interesting perspective on this mystery. Traveling the world and exploring love is a genius idea that has resulted in fantastic stories from completely different backgrounds. Love is really shown in all its shapes and forms, some that I believe many of us didn’t even know existed. This story about love is gentle, touching and emotional, while again providing information from a completely objective and scientific perspective, all through a travelogue narrative, thus really rounding out love and everything we know, or think we know, about it. The photographs of the people Rostuhar interviewed on the journey are wonderful and strong. A brilliant book.
LANA
A phenomenal book, like all Rostuhar’s so far! Richly illustrated, full of interesting sociological questions. Of course, it does not provide answers to the ever-present questions related to human nature, but it offers a handful of thought-provoking topics…
KRISTINA VARŽIĆ
This book is awesome in many different ways. As a study of love, as a window into other worlds, as a collection of stories and photographs, as a reminder of the wonder of the planet we live on, the wonder of being human, the diversity of perspectives and relativity, the fragility, the limitations of our paradigms, understandings of the world, beliefs about what is true and how life is lived… I follow Davor’s adventures, I am fascinated by his travels and projects, I have all his books (except Jungle and Dragon)… and this one is my favorite.
ADRIJANA STRNAD
I have to admit that I did not expect much from the book because the topic could hardly be more complicated, and somehow it is too easy to get lost in some overly idealistic spiritual ramblings. However, the book is great!!
Rostuhar presented over a hundred personal experiences of couples (including his own experience), summarized the leading scientific literature, as well as made a rich historical overview while asking all the right questions. In my opinion, he managed to achieve an ideal combination of an objective scientific approach and a deeply subjective one.
His style is simple and clear, but regardless of that, the content itself shows deep reflection and broad and thorough education and preparation.
Definitely worth reading, and I just want to add that I was delighted by the parts where he wrote brutally honestly about his own love experience. I really have the impression that he has bared a part of himself on those pages.
ERIC MILISAVLJEVIĆ
At first I thought that book was just another cake in Vincek. Then, through reading more serious questions, I thought “those romantics who paid for this on Valentine’s Day will regret it”. And now I can say that this book is the kind that every home, with one or more members, should have, and everyone should read. A fairly informed and experienced perspective of a those who are… people – loving, exploring, regretting, hoping, fighting, falling and rising, echoing other experiences and ideas.
ŽELJKO BOŠNJAK
A wonderful, dear book that is a window into various cultures, customs, new knowledge and much more. A true encyclopedia of love, human relationships, cause-and-effect relationships.
Definitely one of those books that you must read and re-read from time to time. I love it so much that I keep leafing through it, coming back, looking for more; just so I wouldn’t put it back on the shelf. And I gave it a place of honor.
All the best to Davor and Anđela and thank you!
MATEA HRANIĆ
An excellent book, very valuable: from the cover to the content. Thank you for such a project.👏
